Blushing is a physiological response to, among other things, anxiety. This makes erythrophobia one of the few self-perpetuating phobias, meaning that the more you worry, the more likely you are to experience your object of fear. How the Blushing Response Works Blushing is part of the fight or flight response, an involuntary reaction triggered by the ?sympathetic nervous system. When we are anxious or embarrassed, our bodies are flooded with epinephrine, also known as adrenaline, which causes us to experience very real physiological symptoms. In addition to increasing the heart rate, suppressing the digestive system and inhibiting pain, epinephrine may also act as a vasodilator on certain blood vessels. It causes blood vessels to widen, improving the flow of blood and oxygen throughout particular regions of the body. Blushing is an unfortunate side effect of the vasodilation of certain veins in the face. As these blood vessels in the face grow wider, the increased circulation causes the cheeks to redden. Vasodilation sometimes occurs for other reasons, including alcohol consumption and certain medical conditions. No matter what the underlying cause, those with erythrophobia are likely to become anxious and embarrassed when it occurs. This leads to a vicious cycle in which the blushing is likely to become worse and worse. Social Phobia The fear of blushing is a form of specific social phobia. Many people with erythrophobia also suffer from other social phobias, although erythrophobia occasionally occurs alone. The fear generally is not of the blushing reaction itself, but rather of the attention that it might draw from others. If we are anxious or embarrassed, the last thing we want is further attention. The blushing is usually accompanied by a variety of negative thoughts that all focus on how we might be perceived. This, in turn, heightens the level of blushing, which further fuels the negative thoughts and then causes us to feel even more anxious or embarrassed. Symptoms Ironically, the strongest symptom of the fear of blushing is generally further blushing. As you perceive that you are losing control of the situation, you will likely grow redder and redder. In addition, you may experience such common phobia symptoms as shaking, sweating, increased heart rate, and difficulty breathing normally. You might stumble over your words or find it impossible to continue a conversation at all. Over time, you might begin to develop anticipatory anxiety, in which you dread finding yourself in a situation that might cause you to blush. You might begin to avoid certain social situations or, in extreme cases, avoid going out at all. You might also develop additional social phobias, such as stage fright or the fear of eating in front of others, because of a fear that those activities might trigger a blushing reaction. Treatment Treatment depends on the severity and complexity of the phobia. Ultimately, the fear is not actually of the blushing response itself, but of the reactions that you perceive, others might have to your blushing. Brief therapy options, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy  (CBT), treat the phobia by teaching you new thought patterns and behaviors that help lessen the fear. Medications are also available  and are most often used in addition to therapy. If you also suffer from other social phobias, your treatment plan will incorporate all of your fears, addressing them simultaneously. In the market place there are two mouse traps available for them with Woodstream Corporation. The traditional wooden mouse trap and the innovative plastic mouse trap which are made by the same company. The traditional wooden mouse trap is known to work fifty percent of the time and it costs 15 cents for a pack of two. The new plastic mouse trap on the other hand is known to be forty percent more effective than the traditional wooden trap but costs a little more with the price of 25 cents per mouse trap. Despite the great effectiveness of the new innovative plastic mouse traps, people still tend to buy more of the wooden traps. It could be because the customer-perceived value of the traditional wooden trap is very high that people still choose to buy the old snap trap. It could also be that the company’s president Harry Whaley was too, focused on innovation and maximizing sales and profitability when creating the new mouse trap that he lost sight of the underlying customer need and value. This is when marketing myopia comes into play. The traditional wooden mouse trap is cheap, good quality and effective in getting rid of the mouse problem permanently. The way it works is the snap bar comes down violently on the head or neck of a mouse killing them instantly. The problem is being solved right then and there because the mouse died. The old traditional wooden trap satisfies the customer need by doing the entire job on its own. The new and innovative plastic mouse trap on the other hand does not complete the job entirely. It is effective in capturing the mouse; in fact it is more effective than the traditional wooden trap however, it only captures the mouse. It doesn’t get rid of the mouse by killing it. There were some excellent effects done with Elphaba suspended mid air as if flying and Glinda entering the stage on a moon. A lot of smoke was frequently used to set the stage and there was the traditional disappearing act done by Elphaba which one can assume used a trap door in the stage floor. The music was very catchy with many ballads and the singers were quite good. The role of the witch is quite a difficult singing role and the actress was able to handle the singing well. Though the music was entertaining it was also a bit disappointing as it was not very difficult music. There were not a lot of harmonies or intricate singing and much of the music a normal person could pick up just by listening to it enough. The score is nothing on par to the difficulties of Sweeney Todd or the Phantom of the Opera. It would have been nice to here some intricate harmonies and counter melodies, as most of the group singing was done as one or in something that resembled a round (think row, row, row your boat.) The staging was quite effective and the use of the set was well done so that no matter where you were sitting you wouldnt have a problem seeing the action, which if sometimes only occurs on one portion of the stage some of the audience will miss. The set was not extensive, with pieces brought in to supplement the backdrop but everything was carefully chosen to help convey a change in scenery with minimum props. Much of the time the change in costume was also a big help in determining what scene they were in as the school, Schiz, everyone was in school uniform. I would recommend this show for any age, except for little children. Much of the jokes are for adults but teenagers would understand and enjoy as well. The songs and colourful costumes and sets are entertaining for children and most of the songs are hummable. If you are looking to enjoy a nice evening out at the theatre then Wicked is a great choice. Having this gift makes me fell very special because I can travel, communicate, and understand others’ people language and culture. At a very young age I started learning French, German and Italian besides my native language, Romanian. Learning a language to me in learning how to ride a bicycle, once you get it going it’s hard to stop. I learned them the natural way without trying or putting to much effort. To me, learning English it was much easier than the other languages I have studied. When I came to America I didn’t speak English at all and I thought that it would take a long time before I learn anything. To be successful learning a new language you must want to learn it, because if you don’t and not interested in you’ll never get it. At the very early stages of learning a language I think going by the book it is not a very good idea. At the beginning you need as much practice as you can get. In my case television played a major role in learning English. Watching TV and trying to understand the conversation helped me improve my vocabulary and pronunciation at the same time. Reading magazines and articles in the newspapers is another way to approach a new language. This way you learn the spelling of words and can look up in the dictionaries for words that couldn’t be understood. Another thing that helped me was being surrounded by people that only spoke English. Having almost no contact with people that spoke Romanian, forced me learn faster than some people. Communicating with others helps also. Making mistakes and having other people correct you helps and improves your skills. The best way to learn is learning from mistakes. 4 Tips for Writing Effectively, Concisely and Truthfully On November 20, I was featured in the article English Essay Tips from the Experts, a compilation of writing tips from several experts. These tips are valid for anyone writing any type of letter or essay. Remember them as you compile holiday letters and college application essays in the upcoming weeks! #1: Think First. Write Last. Sometimes when people don’t like writing, the actual problem is that they are having trouble thinking. Frequently I’ll work with a client on an essay the person has been struggling with for weeks. One client this past week, for instance, had been through seven revisions of his law school application essay and still wasn’t satisfied with the result. What he needed was not writing help so much as a conversation with a coach who could focus him on a strategy and theme that worked. He needed help thinking. As soon as he had his new outline, he rewrote the essay, completed two revisions, and finalized the essay in just one week. Erin Brenner, a publishing professional, copyediting professor and editor of copyediting.com, makes the important point that writing is the last step in the writing process. First, the writer must gather and organize information; once those steps are taken, writing can be a breeze. #2: Stick to the Point! Another challenge for writers can be going on tangents or including unnecessary details. Test prep expert Alexis Avila cuts to the chase on this issue with his tip that any â€Å"sentence that doesn’t fit under Thesis / Evidence / Transition† can be cut from an essay. Of course, to know whether a sentence fits under Thesis / Evidence / Transition, you need to be clear about what the purpose is of each of your paragraphs! So Tip #1 from Erin Brenner is part and parcel of this one. #3: Active Language Wins Do you ever get the vague feeling that your writing is too wordy but you’re not sure exactly why? I believe the first place to look is at passive vs. active construction (e.g., The car was moving fast down the street vs. The car sped down the street.) Mignon Fogarty, a.k.a. Grammar Girl, points out that the use of â€Å"of†- especially when it follows a â€Å"tion† word- can give you a clue about what to change. If you wrote something like, â€Å"The creation of paper snowflakes took the children hours† you would do well to change it to â€Å"The children spent hours creating paper snowflakes.† See the difference? Feel free to use this trick in your holiday writing! #4: Tell the Truth! This tip from me- Brenda Bernstein, The Essay Expert- makes writing a lot easier for anyone who thinks they need to â€Å"sound good.† If that’s you, stop it! Instead, tell the truth about your struggles and pain if that’s what you’ve been dealing with. And then tell the truth about your victories. No one is interested in how you’ve always known what you know now; we want to know how you grew. When I get to my clients’ real stories, they inevitably express a sense of relief and gain energy to start writing. People who were stuck suddenly can’t wait to start putting words on paper.
